Who is Derek Hatton?

Derek Hatton is a property developer, media man, former politician.

Many people remember Derek Hatton as the fiery Labour deputy leader of Liverpool Council in the 1980s, but nowadays, he is much more mellow.

Today Derek is known more for his TV and radio work, motivational speaking and property development.

It was in 1996 that Derek spotted a gap in the Cyprus property market, noticing that few Cyprus property developers catered to the UK market. He set up a property development company, teaming up with an award-winning property developer G Hassapis Holdings Limited to provide UK investors with exclusive villas and apartments, some adjacent to the new golf course managed by the PGA in Larnaca.

How did this all start?

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo Derek said: "It's a different world to the 80s and I make no apologies whatsoever for doing this now. It's property developers that have transformed Liverpool. Don't forget, this city is now a much better place because of outside developers and the private sector."

Who is Derek Hatton?

Derek Hatton was born on 17th January 1948 in Liverpool. He went to Liverpool Institute for Boys between 1959 to 1964. After leaving school he worked in a mens tailoring shop and later worked for the fire service. He joined the Labour Party and became a persistent thorn in Margaret Thatcher's side.

After politics?

After leaving politics in the 1990s, he pursued a career in the media, working as Talk Radio's morning phone-in presenter. Later he was the subject of a BBC documentary, My Brilliant Career, and presented radio shows such The Degsy Debate on 105.4 Century FM, and appeared on popular TV programmes such as Have I Got News for You, and the BBC2 fly-on-the-wall documentary Trouble at the Top about his time at 105.4 Century FM.

Derek's thoughts on life

"When I was young someone of 40 or 50 was considered old. Now I'll play the kids' CDs and they'll play mine."

"Life has changed and people's attitudes have to change. I was listening to a radio presenter recently and it was all, "Do you remember when this?" and "Do you remember when that?" It just perpetuates the myth that older people can only have nostalgia. It's an exciting life out there, with new technology, music and ideas. I spend a lot of time working and socialising with young people and I want to learn from them. That's what keeps you young."
